University of Connecticut WebTools

Required Elements

The University web standards on this page were implemented in July 2010. Current University websites that follow the original web standards will remain standards-compliant. Any websites that have not been compliant or are created after August 1, 2010 should be updated to follow the new guidelines.

While the main content area of each website is fully customizable to site-specific information and images, there are several required elements that must appear on UConn websites. The elements and their specifications are listed below:

Header

Found at the top of each page, the header delivers a consistent University of Connecticut identity to the community and beyond.

  • The header contains the University logo, site title, and search. Details about each of these items are included in the page below.
  • The header must span the width of the site’s layout, be it edge-to-edge or 100% of a centered layout (as seen on UConn Today).
  • Minimum of 90 pixels tall
  • Background color may be blue (#000066), white (#FFFFFF), gray (#CCCCCC) or the UConn blue gradient (PNG).
  • Nothing is allowed above the header.
  • No secondary logos, images, links, or text are permitted in the header.

Logo

The logo is comprised of the oak leaf symbol and typography with the words University of Connecticut.

  • The logo must be placed on the left side of the header. It should be set 0 pixels from the left edge of centered layouts (as seen on the UConn Today) and a minimum of 15 pixels from the side of edge-to-edge site layouts.
  • A minimum of 15 pixels of padding should always appear on the top and bottom of every logo.
  • A separation rule (line) appears 30 pixels to the right of each logo to divide the logo and site title. The rule is 61 pixels high and 1 pixel wide.
  • The two-line logo should measure 192 pixels wide x 55 pixels high in each website header. With padding and the separation rule (line), the dimensions are 229 pixels x 90 pixels.
  • UConn logo, 2 line example
  • The single-line logo is reserved for use on UConn.edu only.
  • UConn logo, 1 line example
  • The Health Center logo should measure 194 pixels x 67 pixels in each website header. The dimensions are 229 pixels x 90 pixels when padding and the separation rule (line) are included.
  • UConn Health Center logo
  • When placed on a white or gray background, the logo must be UConn blue. When on the UConn blue background, the logo must be white. Visit logos.uconn.edu to download logo files.
  • The University of Connecticut logo should link to http://uconn.edu. For UConn Health center websites, the logo should link to http://uchc.edu/.
  • Secondary logos may not be placed in the header or footer.
Note: When the University enters into a partnership with an external organization, adjustments might be necessary in order to meet both organizations' web standards and will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Contact University Communications with questions.

Site Title

The site title appears in the header of every UConn website. Visitors can return to a site's homepage by clicking on the site title.

  • Located 50 pixels to the right of the logo or 20 pixels to the right of the separation rule (line).
  • Font: Adobe Garamond Pro only.
  • Font size depends on title requirements and length:
    • For a single site title, the font size is 33 points.
    • Many Schools, Colleges, and Divisions mandate that their name appear in the site title above the name of their department or program. In these cases, the name of the School, College, or Division must be 19 points and the title below must be 33 points.
  • The site title must be centered vertically with the UConn logo.
  • The site title color must match the UConn logo. It should be UConn blue when placed on white or gray backgrounds, or white when placed on a UConn blue background.
  • The site title must link to the website’s homepage.
Note: For consistency, please contact your School, College, or Division for the title requirements of your website.

Search

A required feature of any UConn website, the search is now built into the header of the University web templates.

Search example
  • While default search criteria include UConn and People, searching UConn is the only requirement.
  • A maximum of three radio buttons may be included with the search box.
  • Site-specific searches may be included.
  • If placed in the header, the search must be right-aligned.
    • When using an edge-to-edge layout, there should be a minimum of 15 pixels of padding on all sides.
    • When using a centered layout such as UConn Today, there should be no right padding and 15 pixels of padding on the top and bottom.
  • The search may be built into the footer, although we recommend its placement in the header based on usability best practices. If placed in the footer, the search should be left-aligned.
  • The search should appear in the header or footer of a website, but not in both locations.
  • The font family "Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" should be used for all radio button labels.

Alert Banner Code

As part of the University Alert Notification System, a web-activated emergency banner must be built into all UConn websites. In the event of an emergency, this banner will be activated automatically by authorized University officials, directing the community to the alert.uconn.edu site for more specific emergency instructions and information.

When the emergency is clear, the banner will be automatically removed.

The code for this emergency banner is already built into the University web template system. For those using the template version released in March 2007, which points to the global files on the central web server (Web 2 server), no additional code is required.

However, you will need to add a line of code to your homepage(s) if:

  • you are using an older version of the template created before 2007;
  • you have the newer version of the template, but the global files reside on your website;
  • you are not using the University’s official template.

For information about adding the alert banner code to a website, visit our resource page.

Navigation

A navigational system of your choice should appear directly below the header and/or in a side column.

  • Text-based links only (no images)
