Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the web standards mandatory?
The University is committed to communicating a clear and consistent identity to all audiences. A standardized web presence helps the University present a consistent image and website structure that is easy to navigate for all users.
Will exceptions to the University's web standards be granted?
Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Inquiries should be directed to the Office of University Communications at webtools@uconn.edu.
Will the web standards be modified in the future?
Given the evolving nature of the web, the standards will be evaluated and updated periodically. When modifications are adopted, an effort will be made to assure that future changes complement existing web standards.
Are we required to use the official University web template?
You are not required to use the University template. The template is provided as an optional tool to assist webmasters who want to adapt the look of existing UConn websites such as UConn.edu. It is also provided to assist those who do not have the expertise to build a website from scratch.
If you choose not to utilize the template builder, you are still responsible for including the required elements in your University website(s).
How do I build my website to meet University web standards?
There are several ways to build a standard compliant site:- Create a customized University template using the template builder and read the provided tutorials.
- UITS' Web Development Lab is available on a fee-for-service basis to build and update University websites.
- Engage a student worker or intern with web development experience to build or edit the site.
Am I required to update my website each time that updated University standards are released?
At this time, University websites that complied with the University web standards in effect from 2004 to June 2010 will remain in compliance. Changing your site design to meet the new 2010 standards is not required unless your site is not already in
compliance.
The 2010 standards provide users with a new flexibility that many webmasters will appreciate. The updated template available for download has a new look that includes updated CSS and a search box
in the header, among other changes.
Can I modify the template design after downloading it?
You may modify the navigation and body of your pages. The header and footer are strictly controlled within the web standards so changes to these elements are limited.
For more information about the elements that can and cannot be customized, please go to the required elements section of this site.
The University template is based on a Dreamweaver template (DWT file) that includes global styling sheets (CSS). Modification of the template could alter the functionality or styling of your site.
Has the code of the University template been validated and tested in all browsers?
The template pages have been checked using the W3C validator and CSS validator. It has been tested in:- Internet Explorer 6, 7, 8
- Firefox 3, 3.5, 3.6
- Safari 4, 5
- Mobile Safari (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad)
