Volunteer Opportunity with The Hyacinth Williams Foundation for Children Backpack Program

Published on November, 18 2009 at 12:00am

Given the lingering recession, it’s little wonder that many families are hurting financially right now. If you are struggling to make ends meet and provide completely for your family, please know that there is help out there.

As a non-profit organization based in Bloomfield, The Hyacinth Williams Foundation for Children, in partnership with the Bloomfield Public School System and Foodshare, is working to provide supplemental food and drinks to students receiving free lunch at Metacomet Elementary School through a new Backpack Program. The program’s goal is to ensure that students do not have to go without over the weekend.

Every Friday, the HWFC and its volunteers will distribute backpacks filled with easy to prepare meals, snacks, juice and other items. Students can pick up their backpacks in the main office at the end of the school day. Kids then return the empty backpacks to the office on Monday morning so our volunteers can refill them for the coming week. We understand that families may be facing a temporary hardship due to a variety of reasons, such as illness, divorce or job loss. This program is completely anonymous and confidential.

As part of its mission, the Hyacinth Williams Foundation for Children seeks to develop the leadership and entrepreneurial abilities of youths in Connecticut’s Greater Hartford region. However, we understand that children can’t excel without sufficient nutrition. We are committed to ensuring that all children have the opportunity to learn.

Are you interested in volunteering to fill the backpacks on Thursdays?  Please call Eunice at 478-1459.
