What advice would you give to new facilitators?

  • Be honest and straightforward with students. Don’t be afraid to be brutally honest with them.
  • It is critical to establish contact in the first 10 days – 2 weeks.
  • Meet with students early. Schedule several appointments because some may be missed. Don’t give up.
  • Stay on top of your students, but realize you can’t “fix them”… they need to want to help themselves too.
  • Every student is different and requires different support, methods, etc…, but a lot can also remain constant. When in doubt, utilize the First Year Programs Office.
  • Become familiar with University processes.
  • Facilitators need to be student-oriented and persistent.
  • Read your manual.
  • Do not lose faith! If they do not get in touch with you, be assertive and call them.
  • Be yourself!
  • Go to the training and don’t be afraid to ask questions if you’re uncertain.
