Info for Instructors

Referrals

Instructors may wish to refer students to the W and Q Center for work on specific issues with specific assignments.  One-time referrals are ideal for students struggling with one particular assignment or aspect of writing.  Instructors wishing to recommend a student to the center should complete the Referral Form and request that the student bring the form to his/her appointment at the center.  Instructors will automatically receive copies of tutor logs for students referred to the center.  Tutor logs document both the student’s agenda in approaching the center and the tutor’s account of what happened in the session.

We ask that instructors complete each referral in a way tailored to individual student needs and assignments.  This is helpful in clarifying the class context and expectations for each session.

Standing Appointments

The W and Q Center offers standing appointments for writing students who would benefit from regular one-on-one contact with a tutor.  Students who elect to have standing appointments are responsible for meeting weekly with their assigned tutors in order to work on writing assignments.  Standing appointments are ideal for students in all writing-intensive courses, particularly those for whom writing will be an on-going challenge over the course of multiple assignments.

Instructors may refer students for standing appointments by completing the Referral Form located on this page.  Instructors will receive monthly reports on the progress of students referred for standing appointments.  Instructors will also be notified if students are dropped from the schedule as chronic no-shows.

Class Visits

We are always happy to visit classrooms to explain to students what we do.  Generally we speak for about 15 minutes about academic writing and the kinds of writing work students can do in the center.  To arrange for a tutor to visit your class, contact wendy.pfrenger@uconn.edu.
