The Online Writing Center
Here at the regional campuses we often hear from students who are unable to make appointments during our scheduled hours or who would like to come more often to the Writing Center but can’t because of other obligations. In order to better serve these students, we are now offering an online tutoring service staffed by tutors at the regional campuses.
The online sessions are of necessity more limited than regular sessions in the assistance they provide; they cannot substitute for the active dialogue of sessions at the Writing Center. But they can offer a glimpse of the kind of supportive commentary and directed questions we aim to provide. See the links above for more on our tutoring philosophy and practice.
Students should submit papers via email along with assignments and relevant information about their particular concerns in the papers. Tutors will respond to the student concerns within 36 hours via email with comments and questions.
Please read the following guidelines carefully and submit your work to the email address below.
-
Include in your email: your name, the course, the instructor’s name, and a preferred appointment date/time/campus location to follow-up with a regular tutoring session in the Writing Center.
-
When possible, please type the assignment and any other relevant context from the course in the body of the email or attach the assignment as a document.
-
Papers should be submitted as attachments to your email (Microsoft Word format).
-
Identify what you would like the tutor to look at most closely in the paper. Focus your questions carefully, as we are limited in our ability to respond through this medium. For example, you might ask questions concerning the clarity and development of your ideas, the effectiveness of your paper’s structure, the clarity and style of your sentences, or the appropriateness of the paper for the instructor’s assignment.
-
Keep in mind that the tutor will not correct your paper. The tutor will respond with a continuation of the dialogue you began in your email, answering your questions and suggesting further directions for progress with the assignment.
-
Expect a response from one of our tutors within 36 hours (not including weekend hours). This response will not be as complete as a person-to-person session in the Writing Center, so expect to schedule a follow-up appointment with the Center, building from the work done online.
-
In sending your work to the online tutor, you are agreeing to abide by the university's code of academic conduct, and you are agreeing that the work you are sending is indeed your own work.
-
This service is currently an in-process experiment. We apologize in advance for any glitches or missteps in our procedure. This is a new service, and we appreciate any feedback.
-
We reserve the right to reject submissions that do not follow the guidelines outlined here.
