English 111 Curriculum Guidelines
GUIDELINES FOR TEACHING ENGLISH 111

Elements of English 111 Course Design:

Literary reading in English 111 works as a wellspring for writing and discussion. While instructors are encouraged to teach texts that interest them, the course is conceived as a writing seminar and not as an introduction to literature or a course focused on a narrowly defined period or subject area.

Writing:
· a minimum of 30 pages of writing over the course of the semester
· 3-5 major papers
· at least 3 paper assignments to include one draft and a mandatory revision
· one writing assignment or paper to be based on library research
· 1-hour small group tutorial led by instructor for each of the first 2 or 3 papers
· individual conference 2 or 3 times per semester with each student

Reading:
· Readings to focus on literature broadly defined (poetry, narrative, drama, autobiography, creative non-fiction, etc.), with no requirement to cover all the major genres.
· Readings may include contextual resources supporting literary readings, such as historical documents, criticism, biography, visual materials, films, etc.
· Aim for a maximum of approx. 300 total pages of reading.

Library Orientation Required:
· Scheduled by instructor in consultation with library staff.
· Organized around a specific research-based writing assignment.
