CANYBAL
|
CanyBal
is the name given to a 2005 project investigating the ecological role,
distribution, and abundance of Deep Sea Corals, from the Canyons
at Georges Bank to the Balanus
Sea Mount in the North Atlantic Ocean. The National Undersea Research
Center in the North Atlantic and Great Lakes region, based at the
University of Connecticut, sponsored this research cruise, which utilized
the R/V Atlantis and the deep sea submersible, Alvin.
Four science teachers and Connecticut Sea Grant's Education Coordinator
Diana Payne participated. Their observations, comments, and experiments
with fascinating deep sea corals and their surroundings can be found
at the CanyBal
website.

Sea
Grant Education Coordinator Diana Payne participated in the project
this July. Via the Ocean
Explorer website, follow a scientific research cruise and use
mission-specific lesson plans (aligned to the National Science Education
Standards) to bring authentic, real-time experiences into your classroom!
The Mountains in the Sea exploration will focus on the biodiversity
of the New England Seamount chain, the art of scientific illustration,
and “then and now” comparisons with shipboard life on
the R/V Atlantis and the HMS Challenger.
