Rules for Intramural Sports
Co-Rec Softball
The 2005 NCAA Official Softball Rules shall govern play of all intramural games with the modifications listed in these rules; the Assistant Director-Intramurals & Special Events having authority to modify said rules at his discretion.
General
- Players must furnish their own gloves.
- Rubber cleats (of molded variety) and tennis shoes will be permitted. ABSOLUTELY NO METAL SPIKES, SCREW-INS, SANDALS OR BARE FEET ALLOWED!!!
- Bats must be regulation softball bats. No hardball bats are allowed.
- ALL CATCHERS MUST WEAR A PROTECTIVE CATCHER'S MASK. (provided by the Department)
Important Rule Clarification
- You must have 9 players (3 must be women) to start the game. There must be at least 3 women playing at all times (exception: injury).
- You can have 10 batters, 9 (of your choice) who must play the field (including women).
- SLOW PITCH RULES... "No Pitch" called for illegal pitches (i.e. simulating a pitch, too fast, arc of ball not between 6 to 12 feet.)
- Games shall be 6 innings or 60 minutes (whichever occurs first). Games called on account of darkness, rain, etc., after 4 complete innings shall stand as full games.
- NO STEALING, NO LEADING. An official immediately declares a runner out for leading early (dead ball situation). Runners must wait for the swing. If a player is standing off base when the ball is pitched the runner is immediately declared out.
- NO BUNTING ALLOWED.
- Infield fly rule will be in effect.
- COURTESY RUNNERS ARE ILLEGAL. In case of an injury during play, substitutes are allowed to run in place of the injured runner (injured player cannot re-enter the game).
- SUBSTITUTION IN BATTING ORDER. If someone is taken out of the batting order, they must sit out a full rotation from the time they exited the line-up before re-entering. After sitting out a full rotation the player may re-enter in any spot in the line-up.
- MERCY RULE: 15 runs after five innings.
Rule Modifications
- Home team will be decided by coin toss.
- 2 no pitches = walk.
- Each batter is entitled to 2 SWINGS ONLY.
- There will be no balls and strikes or hit batsman.
- No intentional walks allowed.
- The pitcher will pitch as soon as the batter is ready. This means that the fielding team must make every attempt to get onto the field immediately following their turn at bat. Play will not start until the umpire’s discretion.
