Biographical Note:

Dr. Lirio Negroni-Rodriguez , Ph.D., is Associate Professor and Chair of the Puerto Rican/Latino Studies Project in Social Work. Her publications and research efforts focus on Latinas and the areas of mental health, child abuse and child discipline, substance abuse prevention from a family perspective, and supports systems and use of health care services particularly among Latina elders.  Her professional presentations most frequently address issues of cultural competence and social work practice and direct practice with Latino/a individuals and families.  Another area of interest is the advisement and recruitment of Latino/a students.

For 13 years and before entering academia Dr. Negroni was a clinical social worker and supervisor in Puerto Rico and Massachusetts . Her community and outreach service on behalf of Latinos/as in the U.S. goes as far as 1985 when she moved to U.S. and engaged in different community organizing and education efforts. She is co-founder of grassroots groups such as Latinos Unidos ( Worcester , MA ) and the Hispanic Association for Preventive Medicine ( Springfield , MA ). For four years she was the coordinator and moderator of Salud Al Dia a weekly radio show that provided health and mental health education to the Latino/a community. Between 1999 and 2005 she was a speaker at the Hablando en Serio (WPPRX 1120 AM) radio show educating the community on child and adult mental health and family relationships. She has been a consultant to different community groups and agencies on issues that relate to Latinos/as. Her professional presentations focus on culturally competent social work practice, needs and accomplishments of Latinas in the U.S. , and more recently on advisement and recruitment of Latino/a students and community-university partnerships on behalf of Latinos/as. Since 1998 Dr. Negroni has been involved in the movement to rescue, clean and develop Vieques, Puerto Rico . She has been a member of the TODO Connecticut for Vieques committee, coordinator of different consciousness-raising events at the school of social work and participant in different local social actions activities. She helped in the development of a travel and study course to Puerto Rico that includes three to four days in Vieques. Between 1998 and 2000 and from 2002 to 2004 Dr. Negroni was chair of the School of Social Work Puerto Rican and Latino Studies Project. She is currently a member of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Board of Directors representing the Puerto Rican constituency. In 2004 she was appointed to the CSWE Latino Task Force with the command to develop recommendations to enhance the recruitment and retention of Latino/a students and faculty members in social work programs in the United States.
