Join us for a reading by Aracelis Girmay. In Teeth, the poems of Girmay ring out with a burning truth as she transports the reader into the world of despair, discrimination, sorrows, triumphs, joy, and the courage it takes to flourish as a woman of color. Reception to follow.
Aracelis Girmay is a writer of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Originally from Cali (where she was given a red typewriter in 7th grade), she received her MFA from NYU. Girmay works as a writer in the schools with the Community~Word Project and Teachers & Writers Collaborative. Among her most recent publications is the short story "girl medusa" (I WAS THERE anthology, 2002). She has been a featured poet at The Udi Aloni Project Room, the Bowery Poetry Club, New Jersey State Prison--Trenton, & Liquids, among others. A former Watson Fellow & a present Cave Canem fellow (2003), she loves her work as writer & educator-- believes it to be integral to SOCIAL CHANGE. She also loves mangos, Eritrea, Calle Sol, & the smell of gasoline.
