Who We Are
The UConn Poultry Science Club is open to all members of the University Community with an interest in poultry. This includes an interest in show and fancy birds, egg production birds, meat production birds and game birds and waterfowl. The club is very active throughout the year.
In the fall there is an opening social to welcome new members and meetings with special guest speakers. The club also assists the College of Agriculture with Cornucopia Fest by providing security for the event. We work with the Connecticut Poultry Association at the Big E and the Connecticut AG Expo, which is also a fund-raiser. There are also trips to visit commercial poultry facilities and show bird breeders. The club helps with the "Little I", and on the weekend before Thanksgiving the club processes turkeys as a fund raiser, and much of the money is used for a trip to Atlanta, GA, in January to the International Poultry Exposition, where the club meets with the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association and the U.S. Poultry Science Club. Seniors are also offered the opportunity to interview with potential employers. The Exposition has more than 1,100 companies represented, which affords students the opportunities to see the breadth of the poultry industry. In the Spring the club sponsors the State 4-H Poultry Show and Showmanship Contest, and sponsors or co-sponsors a Chicken BBQ for the department.
The club maintains a flock of pure bred show birds which are shown at various Poultry Shows in New England and are used to supply local 4-H clubs with some good quality show stock to start their own flocks. Because of all the activities and service to the Connecticut Poultry Association and the Community, the UConn Poultry Science Club was honored by receiving the 1998 Vice Chancellor's Award for a student organization having Outstanding Programs over the past five years.
