In the fall of 2007, NAHIPSW held its first-ever voter registration contest. Students were challenged to register 35 students or more with the chance to win a $50 gift certificate to the University of Connecticut book store. NAHIPSW staff decorated the stairway at the School of Social Work by illustrating how many new voters the students could register if they each entered the contest. NAHIPSW staff also held a voter registration drive at the University of Connecticut Undergraduate Hartford branch. Undergraduate students were encouraged to register themselves and friends and family. NAHIPSW staff also organized voter registration activities at an area high school.

This year, in addition to the voter registration drive held at the School of Social Work, NAHIPSW staff also worked with Hartford’s Weaver High School students on a project to engage them in registering friends and family to vote. High School students were allowed to use their school’s required volunteer hours to host a voter registration drive. Weaver High School Senior Eric Nunez registered more than 45 people to vote by holding a voter registration drive in his neighborhood. Eric was so motivated by his desire to register voters that he went door to door in his community, asking friends and neighbors to register to vote.
Eric Nunez was the NAHIPSW voter registration contest winner. He won a gift certificate to the UConn Co-op and had the opportunity to meet with University of Connecticut personnel about higher education opportunities. NAHIPSW is extremely proud of Eric and all of his hard work to register voters. In the future, NAHIPSW will continue working with Hartford youth to engage them in the political process and the importance of being registered to vote.
