Program Mission |
The Rainbow Center Speakers’ Bureau is a peer education program that responds to invitations (from faculty, student organizations, etc.) to educate the larger UConn community on issues relevant to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and supportive heterosexual allied (lgbtqa) people. This education is accomplished through the sharing of personal stories and responding to questions and comments from an audience. These panels are frequently used on a college/university campus to reduce homophobic/heterosexist attitudes. Often these panels are used in a classroom setting to provide personal experience in addition to course material. Panels usually consist of 2 - 4 people that identity as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer or a heterosexual ally. Panelists can be students, faculty, staff, or people in the local community, however we have found our greatest success with peers educating each other. Coordination of the Speakers’ Bureau is through the Rainbow Center. |
