Estimating & Mapping Impervious Surfaces

There are many ways to skin a parking lot! Measuring, estimating and mapping impervious surfaces can be an important part of getting a handle on better planning and design for your community. The techniques range from getting out your trusty tape measure, to using sophisticated computer programs to analyze satellite imagery—each with its own cost and accuracy considerations. Below, new techniques and some of the trusty old ones are summarized, and where available, we've linked our summaries to papers that provide additional technical information. There's a lot there. Good hunting!
