Mashantucket Pequot Museum

Intensive Garden Roof

Site Description: The green roof at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center was completed in 1998. It is located off Rt. 214 in Ledyard, CT. The intensive garden roof 75,000 square foot area has pathways, terraced gardens, grassed sitting area with tables and a wooden deck.

Design Detail: The Pequot goal installing the green roof was to blend the museum into the landscape. The types of flowers that have been planted are native non-native. Blueberry bushes and a strawberry patch are also included along with an herb garden. There are gravel paths designed to lead people through the gardens and sitting areas. In the future paver blocks will be installed on some of the gravel paths.

The green roof has an under drain system that collects stormwater not absorbed by plants or evaporation. The under drain is piped to a detention area approximately 100' from the building (picture on right). The Pequots are not currently monitoring the amount or quality of stormwater that leaves the roof. A site visit to the detention area after heavy rains revealed no ponding or presence of moisture loving plants (picture on bottom).

The Pequots report few negative aspects of the roof garden. One problem encountered shortly after installation were a few small leaks. The source of the leaks were hard to find as water is dispersed throughout the roof but, once found and corrected there have been no more problems.

Cost Information: The total cost of the project was $193,400,000.

Maintenance: The roof is maintained by a two man grounds crew. They do regular weeding and mowing as well as fertilizing and irrigation.

Notes: The green roof can be rented out by the public. Staff events have been held on the terrace. Once the terrace is officially complete there will be public access. The architectural company was Polshek and Partners Architects, and the general contractors were Pavarini Construction Company.
