TEACHING AND SUPPORT

Financial support.  Full-time students are guaranteed five years of support.  Student support is a combination of teaching and research assistantships as well as fellowships, accompanied by a tuition waiver and health benefits.  There are three tiers of support based on course credits and completion of requirements.  We strive to ensure that within each tier all students receive approximately the same amount of support each academic year (summers included).  For the 2007-2008 academic year, first-year students are expected to receive (at minimum) $15,500 (not including tuition or benefits).

Teaching.  While students are not explicitly required to teach as part of their graduate training, teaching assistantships provide valuable preparation for academic careers, and thus students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity.  In addition, experienced students sometimes have the opportunity to be the instructor of record for some of the department's undergraduate courses (both in Storrs and at the branch campuses).  Interested students should consult with their advisors and the division head.
