COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Students must take a minimum of six courses offered by the Language and Cognition program, including both core courses and electives.  The program offers two tracks, both of which are designed to provide students with a core body of knowledge while allowing them to tailor their courses of study to their own interests. The Language track provides students with comprehensive knowledge of language processing, learning, and change at the phonological, word, and sentence level.   The Cognition track provides students with an understanding of leading theoretical approaches to the understanding of cognitive processes.

Core Courses.  The core courses the Language and Cognition tracks include:

Language track
PSYC 368 Psychology of Language
PSYC 314 The Mental Lexicon
PSYC 383 Sentence and Discourse Processing

Cognition track
PSYC 367 Cognition
PSYC 312 Ecology of Language & Cognition
PSYC 315 Connectionist Models
PSYC 364 Dynamics of Language & Cognition

Students should consult with their advisors about which track is best suited to their interests. Core courses must be completed before the Doctoral Exam is administered. Under special circumstances, a core course requirement can be waived by action of the Language and Cognition faculty.

Statistics.  Two courses are required:  STAT 242 and STAT 279.   If an equivalent course was completed elsewhere, the requirement can be waived by obtaining a signature from the appropriate UConn instructor.

Breadth.  This requirement is satisfied by three courses outside the division. With advisor’s consent, courses in other departments can count. Ecological courses can count for Language and Cognition students and vice versa but all breadth courses cannot be taken within the Division.
