Software for This Course
Looking for a program for this course? I've done my best to gather them all here, and they're all free for your use. Some of the programs have specific guidelines or restrictions for their use; read the fine print.
- General Download Sites
- The Free Site's Software
Freebies! All sorts of cool stuff, from e-mail utilities, to FTP programs, to text editors, to sounds.
- Tucows.com Lots of downloads for PC (and some for Mac). FTP programs, freeware, shareware, games, fonts, you name it.
- Download.com by C|Net. This opens
to the PC page, but Mac stuff is available. Some of the downloads are demos or shareware, but lots are free and complete.
- Microsoft.com. A plethora of software and fixes is available for Microsoft products, including games (but oddly enough, not Monopoly)
- Versiontracker.com. The best site for Mac downloads. You can find Fetch here, monthly virus definition updates, and all things Mac.
- Programs
- UConn's Software Licensing Group. Go here to see what kinds of software for which UConn labs have licenses.
- Miscellaneous Software from UConn can be found here, including Fetch, WS-FTP, WinZip, and Adobe Acrobat. Only for UConn students and faculty.
- 3270 Emulators are used to access the Mainframe at home, assuming you want to do that.
A Computer Center download with extensive and helpful documentation.
- Internet Explorer 5.01 for Windows 95, 98, and NT. It's slower than
Netscape, but some folks like it better.
- Netscape's Download Index. You can get he very latest version of the Netscape browser (version 7.1), which also includes Composer, Netscape Messenger (a mail program), and, thanks to the former Rebel Alliance, AOL Instant Messenger. A little flaky, but not terribly bug-infested. You can also get cool skins for Netscape.
- Safari. This is the latest Mac native browser. It just came out of beta, and it's still a bit buggy, but it's fast. If you use a Mac and you aren't using Safari, what are you using?
- Mozilla. Mozilla is the company that first developed Netscape, the world's first web browser. They still make an open-source web browser that many people like better than Netscape. If you're looking for a browser alternative, give it a try!
- Opera. Yet another browser alternative. Earlier versions were buggy and pages displayed weird, but some people really love this fast browser. Available for Mac, Linux, Windows, and "Other."
- Norton Anti-Virus.
Available free to UConn Students. The Computer Center has supplied detailed instructions for downloading and installation.
- Here's another download site for WS_FTP from Ipswitch. Free to students, but they want some information.
