What is plagiarism?

According to the
American Heritage Dictionary1, to "plagiarize" means:

  • "to use and pass off (the ideas or writings of another) as one's own,"
  • "to appropriate for use as one's own passages or ideas from (another)," or
  • "to put forth as original to oneself the ideas or words of another."

"In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else's work and lying about it afterward."2
