Annual Awards

The First Year Experience awards were established in 1999 to honor those who teach and mentor within our University Learning Skills and Faculty/Student Seminar courses. First Year Experience (FYE) classes are designed to support and challenge first year students as they transition to the University of Connecticut. These awards provide the Office of First Year Programs with a unique opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the faculty, staff, and undergraduate mentors who work with first year students.

The John T. Szarlan Memorial Student Mentor Award has been established in memory of John Szarlan, a beloved staff member at the University of Connecticut. Mr. Szarlan served as a counselor for thirteen years at UConn and was committed to supporting students' transition to the University. Jennie C. Szarlan established the Student Mentor Award so that her son's work as an instructor, mentor, and guide for students can be continued through the support of First Year Experience undergraduate mentors.

Each year, hundreds of faculty and staff volunteer as First Year Experience instructors. The time and effort that each person devotes to his/her first year students is irreplaceable and highly valued by the students, First Year Programs, and the University at large. The Outstanding First Year Experience Teaching Award is designed to recognize exceptional instructors who support first year students' transition to the University.
