Available courses may include Individual and Family Development, Research Methods, Human Development: Infancy Through Adolescence, Diversity Issues in Human Development and Family Development, Adolescent Development, Death Dying and Bereavement, Parenthood and Parenting and Abuse and Violence in Families. Assistant Professor Positions
The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) at the University of Connecticut invites applications for two full-time, nine-month appointments, tenure-track Assistant Professors. One of the positions will be located at the Waterbury Campus; the other at the Hartford Campus. Both positions are slated to begin in the Fall of 2012. Applicants may and are encouraged to apply to both.
Assistant Professor: UConn-Waterbury (Search #: 2012219) & UConn-Hartford (Search #:2012221): Examples of the research foci for these positions include, but are not limited to, diverse populations, “at risk and underserved populations,” positive youth development early, middle, or adolescent development, family interaction processes, family policy, and research methods and application.
Minimum Qualifications: A doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in Human Development and Family Studies or another relevant discipline by time of appointment; a record or promise of outstanding teaching and scholarship in family and focus areas indicated above.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience teaching related HDFS courses or another relevant discipline; demonstrated experience in grantsmanship; ability to contribute through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience; and Technological innovation in the form of teaching distance learning and/or interactive television courses to multiple campuses.
The Department of Human Development and Family Studies is an interdisciplinary social and behavioral science unit with a large undergraduate program, strong graduate and professional programs, and distinguished outreach and service. The successful candidates’ primary academic appointment will be at either the Waterbury or Hartford campuses with the possibility of work at UConn’s main and regional campuses across the state. These positions are part of a recent initiative that extends the HDFS major to UConn’s Regional Campuses. Faculty members at the Regional Campuses have responsibilities and privileges equivalent to appointments at the Storrs campus, and cross-campus ties are strong and expected. Tenured and tenure-track faculty at the regional campuses are full members of their academic departments in Storrs with the same voting rights and responsibilities as all departmental faculty. Undergraduate teaching assignments are at the appointed regional location, while any graduate teaching occurs at the Storrs Campus. Research may be conducted at the regional campus, or in collaboration with other faculty at the Storrs campus. Service responsibilities must be split between the regional and Storrs campuses. Lecturer Position
The Department of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a lecturer position to be located at the University of Connecticut, Stamford Campus.
The University of Connecticut will extend its early childhood teacher preparation offerings on the Stamford Campus by building on introductory offerings at area community colleges. The lecturer will be responsible for developing the Early Childhood Development & Education Program at Stamford in collaboration with colleagues on the Storrs and Stamford campuses, and in coordination with the Stamford early childhood community. The lecturer will establish cooperative supervisory student teaching placements in Stamford area childcare and early education settings. The position requires the ability to teach coursework in child development theory, curriculum development, early childhood policy and practices, and related areas (as below).
The lecturer will create and/or support the availability of course experiences specializing in infant/toddler curriculum and development (HDFS 3101 Infancy and Toddler Development; HDFS3122 Integrated Methods and Materials for Infants and Toddlers; and HDFS 3181 Observing Infants and Toddlers). In addition, the lecturer will be responsible for arranging and supervising three practicum experiences, HDFS 3183 Child Development Laboratory: Fieldwork Practicum, HDFS 4181W Student Teaching Practicum, HDFS 4182 Administration and Leadership in ECE programs as well as a capstone professional development course, HDFS3126. Responsibilities will be assigned to complete the yearly teaching assignment of eight courses (or course equivalents associated with field duties).
Minimum qualifications include: a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Human Development or a related field; 3 year classroom experience with infants and toddlers; curriculum development and implementation with infants and toddlers; 1 year of college-level instruction within an early childhood education or child study program plus 3 years experience supervising student classroom practice. Successful candidates will have excellent communication skills, leadership ability, and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
Preferred qualifications include: 6 years teaching experience with children ages 5 and younger; experience within an early childhood teacher preparation program.

Clinic Director/Instructor
The Department of Human Development & Family Studies (HDFS) at the University of Connecticut (UConn) invites applications for a full-time (11-month) Clinical Instructor and Director of the Humphrey Clinic for Individual, Couple, and Family Therapy. The Clinic provides individual, couple, and family therapy services to members of the University and surrounding communities and serves as a training site for students enrolled in the Department’s Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE)-Accredited Master’s and doctoral programs in marriage and family therapy.
Responsibilities of the Clinic Director/Instructor include, but are not limited to: managing day-to-day clinic operations; consulting with university departments, local institutions, and community groups to determine service needs, develop new service offerings, market available services, and enhance public relations; developing and implementing clinic policies and procedures; supervising and evaluating clinical staff, graduate assistants, and work-study students; providing clinical supervision to student interns; securing, managing, and acting as liaison with off-campus practicum and internship sites; fostering and supporting clinic-based research projects; developing and coordinating student in-service training on clinical topics relevant to the Clinic’s treatment populations; and monitoring Clinic compliance with AAMFT codes of ethics, Connecticut state statutes and COAMFTE standards. The Clinic Director/Instructor also manages and coordinates the delivery of mental health services for the Clinic; establishes policies and procedures and coordinates logistics and work flow to ensure the effective delivery of services; oversees the Clinic’s computerized data system, manages office budget, developing budget requests and priorities; approves expenditures within established guidelines; plans and implements special projects and assists other programs, as needed or requested.
Some of the topics actively being studied in the MFT Program include high conflict couples; factors related to establishing the therapeutic alliance, client retention, and premature drop-out of therapy; and multicultural foundations of therapy. Some of the many research topics being studied in the HDFS department include: prevention and intervention activities in various contexts and across the life span; strategies for coping with chronic illness and disabilities; children’s conduct and mood disorders; youth development; risk, resilience, & interventions for at-risk youth and families; postpartum depression; cancer survivorship and personal development; and family law and policy. Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: Advanced degree in marriage and family therapy or related clinical discipline with AAMFT Approved Supervisor or Approved Supervisor Candidate designation (equivalent foreign degrees acceptable); licensed or license-eligible in the State of Connecticut as a marital and family therapist; experience working with a variety of clinical populations; and previous experience providing graduate-level student training and supervision. Previous administrative experience in a mental health services facility.
Preferred Qualifications: PhD in marriage and family therapy or related clinical discipline. Experience or promise in securing and managing human service and managed-care contracts, or other sources of external funding; and two years' previous experience administering a mental health services facility.
Appointment Terms: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. This is an eleven month, non-tenure track appointment subject to annual renewal.

Associate/Full Professor - Director
The Department of Human Development & Family Studies (HDFS), at the University of Connecticut, seeks to hire a full-time, tenured Professor/Associate Professor and Director of its Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) accredited graduate programs (MA and PhD) in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) (Search 2012200). The Director works collaboratively with the MFT Program Faculty to manage the academic and clinical training of students in the program, oversees the operation of the program’s on-site clinic (The Humphrey Clinic for Individual, Couple, and Family Therapy), maintains compliance with the accreditation and state licensing standards, participates in the teaching and supervision of MFT students, and represents the program to Departmental, University, and Professional constituencies.
The MFT Programs are long established and function to provide high-quality, comprehensive education in the profession and practice of MFT. Building on the mission of the HDFS Department, the Programs work with local, state, national, and international partners to advance the knowledge base and strengthen the conditions that enhance family functioning. The HDFS Department is an interdisciplinary social and behavioral science unit with a large undergraduate program, strong graduate and professional programs, and distinguished outreach and service. Minimum Requirements: Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, Family Studies, Psychology, or a related discipline; AAMFT Approved Supervisor Designation; licensed or licensed-eligible in the State of Connecticut as a marital and family therapist, record of outstanding scholarship focused on family process, mental health, systemic interventions, and/or MFT supervision and training, and chairing master’s thesis and doctoral dissertations.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience or promise in securing and managing human service and managed-care contracts or other sources if external funding; evidence of commitment to integrative professional teaching; experience with or demonstrated commitment to multidisciplinary collaborative scholarship and to working with a variety of clinical and student populations, including those that are understudied, underrepresented and undeserved; and, experience or promise in the development and management of innovative training and outreach programs.
