Enterprise systems are one of the key elements of the information technology infrastructure at the University of Connecticut. These core systems supports the student, finance and human resource administrative processes at the University. Often these systems are referred to simply as "software." However, this reference does not sufficiently describe the scope and dimension of these systems or our mission as an organization that manages them.

Enterprise systems combine software with people and their technical skills, computer technology, communications networks, business processes and systems management into a complex "engine" that provides the some of the power to run many of the central administrative functions at the University.

As information emerges as a strategic asset for the University, the importance of the systems that manage this information becomes equally important and critically essential. We have begun to view information as a resource like money. It must be collected, managed, invested and distributed in ways that enhance the performance, value and mission of the University.

Our challenge in Enterprise Applications is to identify the best ways to combine our human, technology and information resources in the best possible way to help the University achieve its mission. Since the opportunities to exploit information are vast, we must be selective in how we apply our limited resources in ways that will return the best value.

Recently, UITS implemented the last major component of the Peoplesoft Student Administration system. This system manages the central database that organizes and distributes student information to assist departments with providing a wide array of services to our students and is the repository for storing records of student achievement. Much of our future focus with this system will be to extend its reach within the University and provide direct access to many of these service functions to students via the Internet. These "self-service" operations will change the very nature of administrative services to students, and, we believe, will help improve the overall student experience at the University.

During the next few years we will be focusing our new initiatives on replacing the aging systems that manage human resource and financial records as we continue to make improvements in enrollment management. These new efforts are focused on supporting new directions and improving the operating efficiency of the University. We will accomplish this by providing better control and access to information, reducing administrative costs while providing better services to students, faculty and administrators.

We in Enterprise Administrative Applications look forward to doing our very best to meet these challenges to help realize the vision, promise and success of our directions in information technology.
