About the Center
The Center for International Social Work Studies at the University of Connecticut School of Social Work has been established to promote knowledge building and professional competence in international social work. Social problems are affected by international events and problem solutions increasingly depend upon international cooperation. Therefore, the School of Social Work recognizes the growing importance of social work's involvement in international problem solving and policy development. A global perspective on human needs, social policy, and practice interventions must replace the traditional dichotomy between domestic and international social concerns. While broadly focused on international knowledge related to social work and social development, the Center emphasizes the application of a global perspective to social workers' practice in their own communities and internationally.
The Center puts this philosophy into practice by
encouraging global perspectives and internationally related curriculum content in social work courses; facilitating faculty research and publication on international issues; encouraging student, faculty and practitioner participation in international seminars, courses, exchanges and other international activities; promoting cross-cultural competence; entering into exchange and linkage arrangements with schools of social work in other countries and with international organizations to further these purposes.
