We have been working for several years on the oxoammnium salts, such as 1, shown below. These salts oxidize alcohols to aldehydes or ketones selectively, and also undergo several other reactions, albeit under different conditions and slowly. We prepared 1 for the first time, although other oxoammonium salts had been previously known.

Two reactions are shown below. The first one illustrates the oxidation of alcohols and shows the convenience of the reaction. The second reaction illustrates the oxidation of certain primary alcohols to dimeric esters. Both reactions yield products in high yields that are essentially pure.
