A
Program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF)
Invitation for Applications for the Chemistry REU Program 2006
The
Department of Chemistry at
the University of Connecticut is
seeking
applications for its 2006 NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates
(REU)
Program. Our principal objective is the exposure of undergraduates from
primarily non-Ph.D. granting institutions to a stimulating research
environment. Participants will spend 10 weeks working with UConn
faculty and
graduate students on a research project at the cutting-edge of
chemistry. Research areas
include organic,
organometallic, inorganic, polymer, electroanalytical, bioorganic,
biophysical,
bioinorganic, and physical chemistry. The research program is
accompanied by
seminars and a social program. The program will last 10 weeks, from
Monday, June
5 to Friday, August 11, 2006.
Participants
will gain knowledge of the fundamentals of scientific research and
experience
the intellectual delights of discovery, will gain an appreciation for
the
importance of teamwork in the scientific enterprise, will obtain
experience in
verbal and written communication of research results, and will secure a
foundation for making informed decisions regarding future careers.
Support
includes stipends of $3000,
a travel
allowance, and room and board in our modern University Dormitories.
University
recreational facilities will be available for participant use.
Selection of
participants will be based on academic record, career objectives, and
letters
of recommendation. Eligible
students are U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled as Chemistry
Majors
who have completed their sophomore or junior year by June 1, 2006.
Application
forms may be available from your Chemistry Department Office, can be
obtained
by contacting the address below, or are available
from this website
(APPLICATION
DEADLINE Extended to March 15, 2006).
We
encourage talented women to apply to our program. Our department has three female
faculty
and a significant percentage (40%) of female graduate students. Taking
advantage of our state-of-the-art facilities (i.e. wheel chair
accessible fume
hoods in our new
Chemistry building) and the extensive infrastructure at the
University of
Connecticut supporting students with disabilities, we would especially
welcome
applications from this group.
Last
year was the fourth year for the REU program here at the University of
Connecticut. The participants in
past years
accomplished quite a bit, both in and out of the lab. We are very proud
of
their accomplishments and look forward to continued success in the
years to
come. The UConn Department of Chemistry hosts Undergraduate Researchers
who are
part of a number of programs. All participants of Undergraduate
Research during
the summer months are encouraged to join the seminar series, training
sessions
and off- and on-campus social activities organized around the NSF-REU
Program.
All of our activities are closely coordinated with the UConn Polymer REU Program.
