Science (SCI)Director: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dean's Office 103. Geoscience through American Studies Either semester. Three credits. Open only to Honors students. Not open to students who have passed GEOL 103 or 105. Thorson Reading-intensive foundation course in geology taught from the perspective of American Studies. A small-group, honors-only enhancement of GEOL 103. Readings from American history and literature will be linked to the geology course content. An individual project in the student's area of interest is required. CA 3. 150. Unifying Concepts in Biology, Chemistry and Physics First semester. Four credits. Three lecture periods and one 2-hour laboratory. Prerequisite: MATH 101 or equivalent. Knox, Markowitz, Shaw, Terry A laboratory course introducing unifying concepts from biology, chemistry, and physics and their application to daily life. Includes examination of the scientific process and current scientific ideas. Either or both semesters. Credits and hours by arrangement. May be repeated for credit. Consent of the program director normally before the student's departure to study abroad. How credits are used to be determined by the College Dean and/or Advisor. Special topics taken in a foreign study program. (Also offered as HIST 206.) First semester. Three credits. Open to sophomores or higher. Roe Development of modern science and technology in relation to culture, politics, and social issues. 240. The Nature of Scientific Thought Second semester. Three credits. Open to sophomores or higher. An inquiry into the underlying assumptions and aims of scientific knowledge. Emphasis is placed on philosophical issues generated by current theories in the physical and biological sciences. Instructors approved by the Head of the Philosophy Department. 241. Seminar in the Nature of Scientific Thought Second semester. One credit. One class period. Prerequisite: SCI 240 must be taken concurrently. Open to sophomores or higher. Discussions based on the content of Science 240. |
