Results of a recent survey of Resource Economics graduates from the Class of 2007 show that graduates are employed in a variety of careers with an average starting salary of over $40,000. A recent survey of Resource Economics graduates from the class of 2007 shows that, despite an uncertain economy, graduates have had little trouble finding full-time employment. With job titles ranging from energy analyst to accounting and treasury analyst to regional sales manager, Resource Economics graduates are using the skills they gained as undergraduates to obtain satisfying and high-paying positions in Connecticut and across the country.

Congratulations to Rebecca Cleary (B.S. '05, M.S. '07) whose thesis,"The Impact of Wal-Mart Supercenters on Incumbents' Pricing Conduct: The Case of the Dallas/Fort Worth Milk Market." was named "Outstanding M.S. Thesis" by The Northeastern Agricultural and Resource Economics Association.

The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics was recently featured in The Hartford Courant's Education supplement under the title "Real-life

Syma Ebbin, PhD, an Assistant Professor in Residence, was recently appointed by Governor Rell to be an academic representative on the state's Eastern Long Island Sound Advisory Council. The Council studies challenges facing Long Island Sound, such as hazardous waste and dredging issues, and drafts an annual report for the Legislature that provides information for state lawmakers' budget and legislative decision-making.

Kevin Molloy, a graduate with a B.S. in Resource Economics in 1993 and a M.S. in Agricultural and Resource Economics in 1998, was recently promoted to Senior Vice President of Distribution Finance at AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company. Click here to read the article.

Syma Ebbin, PhD, an assistant professor in residence, was recently selected to serve on the editorial board as a subject editor for the journal Marine and Coastal Fisheries: Dynamics, Management, and Ecosystem Science. This international, open-access online journal focuses on marine, coastal, and estuarine fisheries. In this role, Dr. Ebbin will solicit peer reviews of assigned journal manuscripts and will evaluate and interpret reviews to accept or reject manuscripts.

Kathleen Segerson's environmental economics research was featured in UConn's Advance newspaper. She has a joint appointment in Agricultural and Resource Economics. Click here to read the article.

Rebecca Cleary, an Agricultural and Resource Economics student, presented “Wal-Mart’s Effect on Supermarket Milk Prices” at the American Farm Bureau Federation’s 89th annual convention held New Orleans from January 13-16, 2008. Her research showed a relationship between the presence of Wal-Mart Supercenters’ lower consumer prices and increased profitability for dairy farmers. Click here to see a picture.
