The Positions: The College of Agriculture invites applications for two tenure-track academic year positions in Agribusiness with summer research opportunities available. Long Island Sound Study (LISS)
2 half time fellowships
Description

The Long Island Sound Study (LISS) announces its intent to award partial (half-time) fellowships to two graduate students to participate in and support the work of the LISS Science and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC). The purpose of the fellowships is to provide experience on Long Island Sound issues and programs to students interested in environmental management or policy careers.

Successful applicants will be masters or doctoral students whose research focuses on a topic relevant to understanding and managing Long Island Sound and who have a strong interest in coastal environmental management. The fellowships will be administered by Connecticut Sea Grant and New York Sea Grant, in cooperation with the US Environmental Protection Agency - Long Island Sound Office (EPA-LISO). The period of the fellowships will run concurrent with the 2008-2009 academic year of the home university, plus summer. In addition to continuing his or her research in support of thesis or dissertation requirements, the LISS Fellows will work closely with the STAC co-chairs, providing an average of 10 hours per week of administrative and technical support to the STAC during the academic year and 20 hours per week during the summer. In 2008, the LISS will award half-time fellowships to two graduate students. One applicant will be selected from a Connecticut institution and one from a New York institution.

The Borlaug Leadership Enhancement in Agriculture Program (LEAP)
Fellowship
Description

The Borlaug LEAP is a fellowship program, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), to enhance the quality of thesis research of graduate students from developing countries who show strong promise as leaders in the field of agriculture and related disciplines as defined by Title XII. LEAP is part of the overall Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program sponsored by the USDA.

The LEAP program will support engaging a mentor at a Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) system center to support and enhance the thesis research and mentoring experience. Awards will be made on a competitive basis to students who show strong scientific and leadership potential, have a well coordinated proposal between their home university, a US university mentor, and the CGIAR mentor, and whose research is related to a strong research and support project within the host country. Emphasis will be placed on work that has relevance to the national development of the student's home country. Applications are welcome throughout the year. However, reviews are conducted twice a year and the administrative deadline for the next review is October 31, 2008.

Currently there are two Request for Applications (RFA). For the ongoing RFA, the focus region is sub-Saharan Africa. For this RFA, applicants must be citizens of USAID-assisted countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

The limited release RFA, is focused on Collaborative Research Support Programs (CRSPs). For this special RFA, applicants are welcome from any USAID-assisted country in all regions of the world but students must be affiliated with a CRSP to apply.

The Connecticut Health Foundation (CHF) is seeking a well-qualified graduate/professional-level student to fill a Health Policy Intern position starting in late August or early September. Research and Legislative Responsibilities:

• Conduct research as assigned by Vice President of Communications & Public Affairs (VPCP). Such research topics may include universal health care reform proposals in Connecticut and around the country; legislation to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities; universal behavioral health screenings for children; and access to and utilization of oral health services.
• Conduct literature reviews, legislative analysis, and interviews with key stakeholders.

Project Experience:

Management Experience:
The Team Leader will manage a diverse team of up to 100 people. This will include 3-4 expatriates with the remainder Afghan nationals.

Detailed Tasks Assigned:
The position is responsible for overall project success, and specifically the following tasks:

  • Overall management, supervision and coordination of the project;
  • Supervision and coordination of outputs of all team members;
  • Oversight of credit program
  • Development of conceptual approach for private sector participation in RBSCs and credit program;
  • Liaison with local government, the private sector, civil society organizations and other stakeholders;
  • Coordinate with Ministry of Agriculture to harmonize concepts and approaches for agribusiness development, with particular emphasis on the value-chain approach and promoting private sector investment;
  • Preparation of workshops, progress report and final report;
  • Monitoring and evaluation of project progress and impact introduction of results based impact monitoring system;
  • Assistance to ADB missions in relation to the project;
  • Manage selection and agreement of agro-processors to participate in program;
  • Organize farmers associations and develop plans for provision of technical assistance and product inputs;
  • Manage the development of agri-businesses associated with program;
  • Organize the delivery of agriculture inputs and extension services via farmer extension services via farm associations and agribusiness marketing their production;
  • Assume management responsibility over credit programs after departures of credit specialist.

Compensation:

Description

The position is based at the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), which is a global partnership between UNEP and the financial sector. Over 170 institutions, including banks, insurers and fund managers, work with UNEP to understand the impacts of environmental and social considerations on financial performance. http://www.unepfi.org

The Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) provide a global framework for the integration of environmental, social and corporate governance issues into investment decision-making and ownership practices. http://www.unpri.org

This position is for 12 months, with possibility of extension depending on funding and suitability. It will involve implementing the PRI in emerging markets and developing countries in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.

The role will involve five main activities:

  • Promoting the PRI and building capacity among emerging market investors
  • Developing and disseminating environmental, social and governance (ESG) research, analysis and benchmarking
  • Coordinating collaborative investor engagement on ESG issues to drive responsible business practice in emerging markets and developing countries
  • Identifying and addressing systemic constraints to responsible investment
  • Assisting with various administrative aspects of the PRI, such as supporting current signatories in implementation, coordinating ongoing signatory recruitment, fundraising and other administrative tasks as required by the PRI and UNEP FI teams.

The candidate should have an understanding of responsible investment, and a strong interest in emerging market and developing country investment.
