F-1 & J-1 Student On-Campus Employment
Note: All abbreviations are followed by "#" and are defined in the glossary.

International students who are enrolled in a full-time program of academic
studies at the University of Connecticut are eligible for limited on-campus
employment. Students may work up to a total of 20 hours per week on campus,
full time during breaks, which includes any combination of graduate assistantships
(TA and PA) and student hourly work. Teaching, Research, Project and Program
Assistantships are considered to be part of the academic program and are
usually listed on the student's I-20 or DS2019 as a source of financial
support. This type of employment does not require any additional authorization
from ISSS. F-1 students may engage in
student hourly work without any specific authorization, whereas J-1 students
must have the written authorization of the Exchange Visitor Program Sponsor,
either on the DS2019 or in a letter. |

Tax Liability/Withholding
- Social Security Tax
- All payments are exempt from FICA until the first payment of the year
in which an individual becomes a resident for tax purposes. Students
in F-1 or J-1 status will be exempt for the first five calendar years
in the US. Research Assistantships, Scholarships and Fellowships are
never subject to FICA. Contact Payroll if uncertainty exists

Taxes are deducted based on "single" with one allowance plus contact Payroll for amounts/biweekly, using standard graduated withholding tables, unless
tax treaty exemption applies
